Diabetes and Nutrition
Blood Glucose:
Blood glucose is the amount of sugar found in your blood and produces the bodys energy. The types of food and amounts of food you consume regulate your blood sugar levels. It does not matter which type of Diabetes you have, 1 or 2, you still need to monitor your diet on a daily basis. You must keep your blood glucose levels stable in order to avoid more serious problems associated with the disease. If you consume too many unhealthy foods for a long period of time your levels will become elevated which can cause eye, kidney and a host of other problems.
If you are on medication for your Diabetes you must monitor your blood glucose levels to insure that you do not experience extreme rises or falls. Hypoglycemia is the term used when your levels drop dramatically.
You should be aware to these symptoms:
Feeling weak or dizzy
Perfuse sweating
Change in heart rhythm
Intense hunger
Disorientation
If you feel any of these symptoms check your blood sugar immediately. If it is below 70 consume one of the following food items.
2 or 3 glucose tablets
1/2 cup (4 ounces) of any fruit juice
1/2 cup (4 ounces) of a regular (not diet) soft drink
1 cup (8 ounces) of milk
5 or 6 pieces of hard candy
1 or 2 teaspoons of sugar or honey
Test your sugar levels again after 15 minutes. Once your level has stabilized eat a healthy snack.
Always carry hard candy or glucose tablets with you, and it is a very good idea to have an emergency bracelet or necklace for identification purposes.
